RESOURCES:Abortion Fact Sheet

Many SRE teachers find that teenagers themselves raise the issue of abortion in sessions about pregnancy.

Furthermore there has been a lot of publicity since 13th May 2004 around the decision (without her motherīs knowledge)to have an abortion made by a 14 year old girl in Mansfield. This has sparked debate from many viewpoints, but on 15 May the Guardian published the views and feelings of a parent who wished heīd been able to help his daughter look at some of the reasons not decide to keep her baby. See here for the full story

In the year 2000 there were 3748 abortions carried out on under 16īs in the UK. these were clearly unintended pregnancies with a highly undesirable outcome for the teenagers. Abortion therefore is an extremely important and avoidable issue if teenagers are educated to negotiate contraception or abstinence assertively i.e. contraception education is carried out successfully.
