RESOURCES:SEXPERIENCE Workshops

This exciting new SEXPERIENCE workshop to help parents and carers communicate most effectively with their teens about sex and relationships, featured on BBC GMR on 14 March 2005. As part of National Contraceptive Awareness Week the SEXPERIENCE workshop held on Friday 11th February was attended by Faye Ruscoe a BBC GMR reporter. Faye recorded an interview with Barbara Hastings-Asatourian about why involving parents in sex education is so important. She then spoke with parents, about their feelings before and after the workshop.

Parents were encouraged to reflect on their own experience of sex education and talking to their parents when they were teens. One mum explained that even when the word pregnancy was mentioned on the TV when she was a child, the vacuum cleaner was used to drown the sound out so no discussion ensued! Another said that at 14 her mum threw a book at her about periods and that was all!

After the workshop parents said they had found it very useful. One said it helped her see that parents get stuck in their own sense of values and forget that times have changed. Another said it had made her much more aware of what was needed.

You can listen to the 3 minute GMR feature as an MP3 file here. It may take a few minutes to download as it is quite a large file
