Caps and diaphragms are barrier methods of contraception for women. The cap fits over the cervix and is therefore smaller and deeper. The diaphragm covers the cervix and the small part of the vagina between the cervix and pubic bone. Both are quite effective if used with spermicide, with careful use if 100 women use the method for one year, 4 - 8 will get pregnant. Compare this to 80 - 90 of 100 women getting pregnant if they use no contraception for a year. To use it properly women have to feel very comfortable with their own bodies, and feel happy feeling for the cervix to check the diaphragm or cap is in the right position after insertion.
