This week's Granada Edition at 8 p.m on Granada TV looked at the experiences of 3 young women from the North West who had babies in their late teens, but it also included clips from a sexual health information session Lisa Brotherton from Glossop Women's Aid and Barbara Hastings-Asatourian from Contraception Education delivered in the inclusion suite at Glossopdale Community College.
Filmed in July 2008 by Mange2 Productions, the sex education component featured Contraception the Board Game and demonstration kits. In between these sequences were interviews with government minister Beverley Hughes, Simon Blake CEO of the charity Brook, the UK Youth Parliament and Barbara Hastings-Asatourian from Contraception Education. The message was that, although it is very hard and not without a struggle in many cases, with the right support, young people can continue in education and employment and be good parents. Relationships with the baby's grandparents seemed to be very significant, as was the ability to be open and honest with each other in the family and, of course beforehand in school sex education sessions.
The programme was refreshing because it showed the difficulties of being a teenage parent without the all too frequent tabloid demonisation of teenagers or insensitive intrusion into their privacy. Blog with us about this here
